Why rain helps you settle

Rain is nature’s noise machine. Thousands of drops make a broad, even sound that covers distracting noises, much like pink noise, while small variations, such as a drop on glass or a gust through leaves, keep it from feeling artificial.

It also carries a feeling of shelter: being indoors, dry and undisturbed while the weather does its thing. That makes rain one of the most popular backgrounds for studying, writing and falling asleep.

Layering several rain recordings is what makes this mix work for long sessions. A single loop can start to feel repetitive after a while, but three layers with different textures overlap in ever-changing ways, so your ear never catches a pattern.

What’s in this mix

  • Light rain as the steady base.
  • Rain on a window for close, crisp detail.
  • Rain on leaves for a softer, outdoor texture.

Each layer has its own slider. Turn up the window for a cosy desk, the leaves for a forest, or add rain on a tent, a car roof or an umbrella from the Sounds tab. Focuship has eight different rain recordings to choose from.

Rain mixes to try

  • Rainy desk: rain on the window, quiet keyboard and a little pink noise.
  • Rain and fire: add a crackling fireplace for a cosy evening.
  • Rainy café: add coffee shop chatter for a busy, sheltered feeling.
  • Storm: swap to heavy rain and add thunder, or open the thunderstorm mix.

The recordings are saved on your device after the first play, so your rain keeps falling offline.

Questions

Are rain sounds good for studying?
For many people, yes. Rain masks background noise and is predictable enough to fade into the background. Keep it at a low volume and pair it with a 25 minute timer.
Can I fall asleep to rain sounds?
Yes. Lower the window layer so the sound is soft and even, and set a timer if you would like it to stop later.
Can I add thunder?
Yes. Add thunder from the Sounds tab, or open the thunderstorm mix for heavy rain, thunder and wind.
